When both authors viewed the first stock of files on North Korea, freshly retrieved from the kilometers of Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) Archives by the IPN Archivists in December 2016, it was the first time that anyone from the outside has accessed them since their archiving in IPN. Our purpose was to evaluate their content and discuss how we could shed light on them. Since then, several further inquiries were conducted in IPN Branches, hours of work were invested to collect and process the documentation, and the project grew exponentially.
We would not have been able to accomplish this enormous task without a wonderful team of people and the support of the management of our relevant institutions. This project was enabled by the efforts of many individuals who assisted us in gathering, editing and processing information. Some of these individuals wish to remain anonymous.
The authors would like to thank Ms. Sylwia Szyc of the IPN who prepared the original Polish index of archives on North Korea at IPN, based on which a formatted edition was later made and arranged according to thematic groups, authorities, and years, and translated into English and Korean for this project. Both Ms. Szyc and Mr. Marek Hańderek of the IPN rendered us a helping hand during the stages of gathering, processing or analyzing of the documentation.
We are also greatly indebted to several translators and editors, as well as those who provided guidance on the Korean terminology. Special thanks go to Dr. Kyu-Nam Kim who provided corrections to the Korean version of the index, to Ms. Ji-yoon Lee for her long hours of translation to Korean, to Ms. Sohee Kim for overseeing the publishing aspect, as well as to Ms. Daye Gang for her meticulous proofreading and correction of the final text.
Our enormous gratitude goes also to the personnel who scanned the documentation and photos, as well as the designers of the publication and this website.
